El Yaque is a beach where windsurfers, kitesurfers, and families with small kids enjoy the sun and beach together. El Yaque used to be a small fishing village. It is still small, but now it is an internationally known windsurfers' mecca. The beach enjoys a consistent wind most of the year, plus the waters are very shallow, making it an ideal windsurfing place.
Recently El Yaque has also become a kitesurfing center. The more skilled kitesurfers are fun to watch. Many also go to a separate nearby bay by a boat so as to have more space.
This is not the best sunbathing beach, because the wind that the surfers love also causes sand to blow a lot. It's a little better when you're laying on a chair - which are available for rent on the beach. You will also find several restaurants, bars, and beach vendors.
El Yaque is situated behind the Margarita international airport, on the southern part of Margarita. A lonely road leads from the airport road to the village. The village itself is fairly small, but has several good hotels (most visitors are wind surfing aficionados), restaurants, and two little general shops with typical sunbathing items and some groceries.
El Yaque is one of the best beaches on Margarita for children since the waters are so shallow. You can just walk and walk and walk without it getting more than chest-deep. Families can enjoy watching the kitesurfers and windsurfers while letting kids play on the fine white sand, or learn to swim in the warm shallow waters.
